Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security Review

Posted on May 14, 2011

How about a security solution with such a light touch that you’ll never know it’s there until you need it? The software for you is Titanium Internet Security 2011 from Trend Micro.

Introduction

The clever developers at Trend Micro have been evaluating what most people really want from their security software. With Titanium Internet Security 2011, they focus on the twin pillars of performance and usability to bring you a fast, efficient and easy to use solution which doesn’t scrimp on safety features. With real time updates, protection against malware, spyware, data theft and spam, along with a set of parental controls - this is a comprehensive package with a surprisingly light touch.

Installation

Installation is extremely quick and you’ll only be prompted to enter an email address and details to create an account. If you already have an account with Trend Micro then the email address you used and password will suffice. After a couple of minutes the software is installed and running and you can get back to work or play.

User Interface

As user interfaces go, this one truly is minimalist. All security software suites are striving for that easy to understand feel but Titanium Internet Security 2011 really achieves it. There are three simple options. Firstly, the Security Summary tells you about any threats the software has stopped. Parental Control gives you access to configure the computer for your children and ensure that they are protected online. Finally, the Subscription section highlights how long you have before your license expires.

Below this you’ll find the Scan button with options for Quick, Custom or Full Scan. Then there’s the Options menu and finally the Security Report. All of the scan options are fast, ranging from a few seconds up to around 20 minutes (this will vary slightly depending on the size of your system). It is perfectly possible to continue on with another activity while the scan runs in the background, but it is best to schedule full scans for times when you aren't busy on your computer.

The Options menu allows you to configure scan frequency and the level of protection but the defaults are sound so there’s no real need to venture in here. The Security Report offers a color coded graph with Viruses, Spyware and Web threats clearly marked. You can review the activity over a set period of time from the last month up to the last year.

Features

With such a basic interface and low demands on system resources you could be forgiven for thinking that Titanium Internet Security 2011 is a lightweight product but you’d be wrong. In actual fact, it offers full protection from malware and spyware and it blocks unauthorized changes to any of your applications. When it comes to the Internet, it blocks dangerous websites and links (even in emails and instant messaging clients). It is also capable of blocking email and image spam and to keep you secure, it optimizes Windows firewall. If you like to shop online you can relax safe in the knowledge that Titanium will keep your personal information under wraps.

Another major concern for anyone with children is online safety. Titanium Internet Security 2011 has a comprehensive set of Parental Controls which allow you to select various protections for your child. You can choose from a number of preset options for different age groups. For example, Ages 3-7 for small children offers complete protection in a number of categories. The system is a simple checkbox grid so you can easily custom it for your child and decide what content and applications you are comfortable with them accessing. Naturally, it is password protected so your little angel can’t interfere with the restrictions you have imposed. You can also review activity reports to see exactly what they get up to online in detail.

Performance

Perhaps the most impressive thing about the Titanium Internet Security package is the light footprint in terms of system resources. The software is able to make so few demands on your system because it uses a cloud security infrastructure. The Smart Protection Network gathers information about online threats and is able use that data to prevent threats from getting any hold on your computer. The processing takes place on the network and your computer is updated in real time so there is no need for it to use your system resources and there is also no need for you to perform updates manually. The whole process is automated and stays behind the scenes, leaving you free to enjoy your computer.

Conclusion

This is a simple, streamlined security suite. Every aspect of Titanium Internet Security 2011 is speedy and requires minimal input from you. It is easy to understand so there’s no need to get bogged down with configuration and it delivers cutting edge protection from the very latest threats. You can get a 1 year license for 3 computers for $69.95.
