McAfee AntiVirus Plus 2011

Posted on December 10, 2010

If you’re looking for a reasonably priced anti-virus solution which will protect you from malware and allow you to browse the web safely then you need to try McAfee AntiVirus Plus 2011.

Pros
  • Excellent protection from malware
  • Comes with a firewall
  • Extra tools for secure file deletion and PC tune up
Cons
  • Occasional false positives
  • Reported problems installing on some infected PCs
Introduction

It is vital to run security software on your computer because the web is full of potential dangers. While many of the antivirus solutions on the market are very bare bones, McAfee AntiVirus Plus 2011 offers comprehensive protection. It also takes the lead over most of the competition by offering a firewall and some handy extra tools. Let’s take a closer look at this security suite.

Installation

You’ll find the installation is a simple and quick process. The only possible hitch is the check for incompatible software, and you’ll be prompted to remove any found before the installation can proceed. It’s a transparent procedure and the installer keeps you informed on progress throughout. Within a few minutes the software will be working to protect your system and you can get back to work.

If your system is already badly infected then installation may be a problem, but thanks to the comprehensive and friendly customer support provided by McAfee you can always find a way to clean it up.

User Interface

All of the major security software providers are striving to simplify their menu systems and make things clear for the end user. McAfee overhauled their user interface in last year’s release, and the 2011 edition features the same concise layout. You’ll find a status report at the top displaying Real-Time Scanning, Updates, Firewall and Subscription. If anything requires attention it will be instantly apparent.
Below the status you can see the various features of your package. Each entry expands to reveal the contents when you click on it. By selecting a specific feature, you’ll trigger a new pane to pop up containing all the relevant options for configuration. The layout is good and your options are clearly labeled, so even inexperienced users will have no trouble finding what they are looking for. Since the default options will ensure your system is well protected, further configuration is entirely optional.

Features

A great range of features is what makes McAfee AntiVirus Plus 2011 stand out from the crowd. As you would expect, you’ll get excellent protection from viruses, spyware, adware, root kits and other dangerous programs. Anything with the potential to cause a problem is quarantined or deleted as soon as it is identified. You may get the odd false positive as the software identifies a harmless file as dangerous, however, it is better to be safe than sorry.

The McAfee SiteAdvisor is adept at blocking dangerous websites and links so that nothing malicious makes it onto your system. It will also flag websites attempting to steal your personal details so you can shop more safely. It works with all the major search engines, and a few minor ones as well, and your search results are color coded so you can see anything potentially harmful at a glance.

Most antivirus packages don’t include a firewall. It tends to be something you only find in more expensive security suites, but you’ll be glad to learn that McAfee AntiVirus Plus does come with a firewall. This means it can serve as a complete security solution and you won’t have to install anything else.

As an extra incentive to invest in this package, you also get a QuickClean tool that will eliminate junk files from your system and a Shredder for securely erasing files.

Performance

The software is designed to be unobtrusive and, for the most part, it will be an anonymous guard on your system. Since full system scans inevitably slow down your computer, McAfee AntiVirus Plus offers the option to schedule scans and it also takes advantage of idle time so that conflicts are easy to avoid.
Detection of malware and dangerous websites is excellent and McAfee’s products are very highly rated in this regard. This is an efficient option compared to other security suites on the market.

Potential Improvements

For a security solution in this price bracket, there isn’t much wrong with McAfee AntiVirus Plus. While it is superb at protecting a clean system, one area where it could be improved is installation and repair on a badly infected system. The only other thing is the issue of false positives, which is relatively common with security software in general. Although it is better to be safe than sorry, it would be prudent for McAfee to work on eradicating this.

Conclusion

There’s simply no denying McAfee AntiVirus Plus has an awful lot going for it. At $39.99 for a 1 year license for 1 PC, you will struggle to find better value for your money. Protection from dangerous programs and websites is excellent and the added extras in the shape of the firewall and system tools are not to be underestimated. The potential problems with installation and false positives will only affect a tiny minority of users. Overall, this is a security suite that it is very easy to recommend.
